Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Since nose is such a prominent feature
of our face, especially in profile, it is also a factor in
determining character at a glance. For example, a small nose
is perceived as feminine, while a hooked nose is believed
to characterize a powerful and energetic person. While many
people are proud of the nose they have inherited, many would
have liked to change their nose shape as well as the way they
are perceived. Breathing problems could be improved at the
same time as correction of the external appearance of the
nose.
History of aesthetic nasal surgery
Reconstruction of the nose is among
one of the oldest aesthetic operations practiced in India
a few thousands years ago. In Indian culture an act of dishonour
was frequently punished by mutilating or amputating the nose.
In the 1930s, a Berlin based surgeon Jacques Joseph has performed
the first aesthetic nasal surgery. Since that time, operation
methods have developed. During the last decades the more sophisticated
techniques have come into use to improve the various parts
of the nose to achieve the best possible results.
Most common nose reshaping operations:
· Refining the nasal tip
· Correction of the base of the nose
· Nostrils reshaping
· Hooked nose correction
· Nose reduction
· Reducing the nose length

Operation
Surgery of the cartilage and soft tissues
of the nose is usually done in local anesthesia while reshaping
of the bone is performed in general anesthesia. The operation
lasts 1-2 hours. Rhinoplasty surgery is performed from inside
the nose and leaves no external scars. In some cases, when
an external incision is required, it is camouflaged in natural
skin creases and is not visible. The nasal cast will remain
in place for approximately 1 week and will be removed in the
hospital.

The tip of the nose may remain hard
and numb but it becomes softer and sensitivity returns within
a few months after the operation. Although the new shape of
the nose is apparent when the splint is removed, the nose
will be swollen and will remain so for several weeks.

During the consultation, the surgeon
discusses possible options together with the patient and helps
the patient to decide which surgical approach will best meet
his or her cosmetic goals. At our hospital we employ Mirror
2000 computer programme for planning of nose and chin reshaping
operations.It helps the surgeon to visualize the results the
patient wants to achieve. This programme allows us to create
a new shape of the nose and compare the picture of the existing
nose and the new nose putting them side by side on the computer
screen. The patient has a chance to see and compare various
nose shapes and decide if the new nose suits him or her.
